How will this ban affect your life?

[What the email will look like] To my Local Member of Parliament, I am one of your constituents and I am writing to ask you to make contact with the Honorable Paul Papalia, Minister for Police (and Minister for Veteran’s Affairs) in the hopes that you will ask him to reconsider his decision to blanket ban gel blasters in WA (amendment to Weapons Regulations 1999, Schedule 1 on 03/07/21). The effects of this ban include: * Alienating the hundreds of veterans that not only enjoy the hobby but also heavily rely on it for their mental health. * Taking away one of the only working methods of therapy for hundreds of sufferers of Anxiety Disorders. * Removing what is for some with moderate-to-severe disabilities the only way for them to interact with others, improve mental health and more fully take part in the better aspects of recreation and community. * Destroying one of the only ways that thousands have to enjoy a safe, healthy and fun hobby that has zero negative impact on anyone and benefits all who partake in it. * Devastating the lives of thousands of West Australians and destroying at least 4 WA businesses. It will personally affect my life too. [EFFECTS] BUT IT’S NOT TOO LATE. The gelball community of WA was never properly represented in any of the decisions and many would relish the opportunity to help guide this decision in the best ways possible. We know we can help Minister Papalia do right by the WA Police, the general public and the Gel Blaster Community, and we ask that you help give us that chance. A WAY FORWARD Since gel blasters are now outlawed in WA based on appearance, their appearance can be changed so as to not be mistaken for actual firearms. Ideally they'd be legislated for and legalised as in Queensland but, failing that, as shown in South Australia, they can actually be licensed and serialised the same as actual firearms, even though THEY ARE TOYS. As many former gelball players are now moving to "real steel" and getting licensed to keep their ACTUAL GUNS in their homes, it would be easy to allow them to keep their TOYS at home as well. STAYING HOPEFUL This thing doesn’t have to happen in a way that’s going to do irreparable damage to the lives and physical and mental health of thousands of West Australians. We can all work together to find a way forward that can avoid the inevitable devastation while still maintaining 100% of the proposed benefits to public safety and Police concern. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider my personal experiences as well as the community’s request for consultation. I am writing to ask you to make contact with Paul Papalia, WA's Minister for Police (and Minister for Veteran's Affairs) in the hopes that you will ask him to reconsider his decision to blanket ban gel blasters in WA (amendment to Weapons Regulations 1999, Schedule 1 on 03/07/21). The effects of this ban include: * Alienating the hundreds of veterans that not only enjoy the hobby but also heavily rely on it for their mental health. * Taking away one of the only working methods of therapy for hundreds of sufferers of Anxiety Disorders. * Removing what is for some with moderate-to-severe disabilities the only way for them to interact with others, improve mental health and more fully take part in the better aspects of recreation and community. * Destroying one of the only ways that thousands have to enjoy a safe, healthy and fun hobby that has zero negative impact on anyone and benefits all who partake in it. * Devastating the lives of thousands of West Australians and destroying at least 4 WA businesses. This ban in WA affects all Australians whether gel blasters are legal in our state or not. It's a travesty of the parliamentary system and a poor example of how the government should interact with the people. It sets a dangerous precedent for how the Minister for Police of a state can arbitrarily change laws with zero consultation or consideration for a significant portion of the population. BUT IT’S NOT TOO LATE. The gelball community of WA was never properly represented in any of the decisions and many would relish the opportunity to help guide this decision in the best ways possible. The gelball communities in other states have been an active and important part of the discussion and WA needs to follow suit. I know the WA gelball community can help Minister Papalia do right by the WA Police, the general public and the Gel Blaster Community, and we ask that you help give them that chance.
